The Feedback Staircase
The Feedback Staircase can be helpful in coaching Agile teams to improve their communication skills and processes. By identifying these behaviors, team members can work together to create a safe and supportive environment where feedback can be given and received constructively. 🌟
The model is made up of five steps:
1. Reject: The first step is to reject or deny the feedback received. This can occur when the recipient sees the feedback as criticism or an attack on their work or actions.
2. Defend: The next step is to defend oneself against the feedback. This can involve arguing, justifying, or making excuses for one's actions or work.
3. Explain: In this step, the recipient may try to explain or justify their actions further. They may provide more information or context to try to convince the feedback giver that their actions were justified or that the feedback is unfounded.
4. Understand: In this step, the recipient of feedback takes time to truly understand the feedback they have received, even if it is difficult to hear.
5. Change: The top step in the Feedback Staircase involves implementing changes based on the feedback received. However, in a defensive response, the recipient may not take any action to change their behavior or work, as they may still reject or defend against the feedback they have received.
By using The Feedback Staircase as a tool for coaching Agile teams, team members can learn to recognize these behaviors in themselves and others, and work together to create a culture of open and constructive feedback. This can help to improve team communication and collaboration, leading to better outcomes for delivering value and the organization as a whole. ✨
